20 STEPS OF MEDICATION ADMIMISTRATION

 

1.      

Medications are stored in a specific place in the home.  Locate medications

2.      

Wash hands by singing Happy Birthday twice

3.      

Administer all meds no later than 1 hour after scheduled time or no earlier than 1 hour before.  If meds are dispensed after the 1 hour window then an Incident Form must be completed.

4.      

Remove appropriate rack from med cupboard

5.      

Review each  blister pak  prior to commencing and ensure that the label on

the medication blister is correct.  Do not proceed if there are any differences.

6.      

Make sure medications are in sight or secure at all times

7.      

Use only designated work space for procedure

8.      

Check time  of medication administration

9.      

The correct number of pills are in the blister  

10.   

Check dosage and time  

11.   

Use plastic med cups to dispense medication in

12.   

Put med cup under blister pack and depress appropriate bubble with thumb, using the “no touch method”.

13.   

Place a dot in the appropriate MAR book after dispensing appropriate bubble.  Count tablets  

14.   

Prepare med if necessary(crush, in yogurt, with water, with juice, etc.)

15.   

Deliver and directly administer, no more than two pills at a time after making sure meds are secured in cupboard using “Right Approach”, “Right Technique”

16.   

Ensure person swallowed meds

17.   

Sign initials on the date of blister pak after ensuring it has been swallowed

18.   

Do not dispense more than one person’s medication at one time

19.   

Put all medications away immediately after completion of procedures and leave area clean and tidy

20.   

Never sign for another person. Report all irregularities to the primary care provider immediately.
