TIPS from LIZ: I have learned that Caregivers with a client that is under the care of Mental Health have an option for Respite. I was talking to Jane's Mental Health nurse and she was telling me that a client can go to this facility if the Caregiver is going on holidays, or just needs a break (or, the client has just got out of hospital and has no place to go.) The client has to be referred by the Mental Health worker and one has to be aware that there could be a Wait List to go to this licensed facility. The funds for the clients duration are the Shelter portion of their pay. (I imagine there is more info to look into, but that's all the MH nurse knew about). This could be good news for a Caregiver who really needs a break, or to go on holidays, so I thought that it would be a good idea to put it on our Web site.

Also, are Vancouver Caregivers aware that for an Emergency situation with their Client, the Caregiver can phone 911 and ask for Car 87? This car has a Police member plus a Mental Health worker, and they assist with the problem. (I have had them twice over the 16 years, and they must really like their job, because I was so impressed with how they handled these situations. They take right over, and done in such a professional manner) They, if necessary, will call for an ambulance to take the client to Ventures or VGH psych unit. So far, this service is not available in other areas, however, I haven't finished my search inquiry yet.

Earthquake/Emergency Preparedness -

I found this kit at Costco for $165.00 and was very impressed with it.  It is designed by Emergency First Aid Products Ltd. in collaboration with the Canadian Red Cross.  It includes a complete First Aid Kit.  My earthquake/emergency supplies would have been sufficient if we didn't have to travel or relocate, a tub filled with canned foods, etc. and three large Canadian Springs bottles of water.  But we certainly couldn't travel or relocate with it without a forklift and 1 ton truck.  This caught my attention because of it's portability, compactness and thoroughness.  So if you're having any problems getting this part of health and safety together, you might want to go take a look.  It's also online at : Red Cross Emergency Preparedness 4-person/3-day Survival Kit ....Doug
